Medical treatment and care
One highlight of our core mission is to provide medical treatment and care to the people in the villages.  We have been fortunate to have doctors, nurses, nurse midwives, and technicians who have volunteered to accompany us on many trips.  When patients are very sick or in need of more advanced care, we transport them to the local clinics and/or hospitals.

Here is a photo gallery of some of their work

Antonio, the man who has Parkinson's disease in San Pedro, with Diana.  We took Antonio to the Clinic Ana Stahl in Iquitos for his new medicine October 2007.  When we saw him in April 2008, he proudly came walking to us with his hands outstretched to show us that they weren't shaking.  He was just beaming!!  He is now doing fine and we continue to buy his medicines and see that he gets to the neurologist once a year.
This is little 5 year old Jessica, a Yagua Indian girl, whom we visited October 2007.  The sores on her legs are from the knees down and no where else on her body.  We cleaned them very well  and left antibiotic cream and instructions for their care.  However when we returned in March, they were no better.  We contacted Dr. Linnea Smith from the Yanamono clinic on the Amazon River and she suggested a different cream and vitamins.  On our trip the next month we took the medicines to Jessica's mother and we are happy to report that after a year, her legs are fine,
Dr. Payel Gupta
at Caritas Felices Girls' home, checking a newborn.  This baby was born to a 14 year old resident who became pregnant from her attacker.  She also checked another child, 12 years of age, who is also pregnant.
Here is Payel, below, with her young patient at the
Villa Martha Orphanage

Dr. Vera Martin holding clinic in Canadá and attending to gravely child.  Unfortunately this child died within a few hours of advanced pneumonia, after we transported him to a jungle clinic in Orellana .
Here Dr. Vera has successfully removed a spine from the foot of a stoic young man
Here is a case of leishmaniesis on a 14-year old native Yagua boy.  We transported him to the jungle clinic in Mazan where they have a government-sponsored program for this disease, which means that the treatment was free.  Medicine from the clinic was sent by boat to the jungle village of Mangua, where técnico Mauro administered the daily IV doses for 20 days.  When we saw him 4 months later, his leg was much improved and healing.  There were 3 cases of leishmaniesis this year on the lower Napo River.  All  3 patients had visited the village of Atun Cocha at the same time.
Not all caregivers are doctors or nurses.  Here pre-nursing student Jilly Maitland takes care of a young man with severe machete cut to the hand (into the bone) as we get him ready for transport to clinic in Mazan
