The Fifth Grade Kindness Mission
"I expect to pass through life once. If there be any kindness I can show, or any good thing I can do for any fellow being, let me do it now, and not defer or neglect, as I shall not pass this way again" William Penn
With the help of teacher Michelle Carlson, her fifth class adopted the village of San Juan de Floresta, located on the Napo River in the Amazon rainforest of Peru. They raised money and sent many useful and fun items:
Vitamins
Toys
Donation for shoes
School supplies
And best of all, they sent photos and information about themselves and where they live and go to school to the children in the jungle. The above items were made in 2 deliveries that year.
On the day of delivery, the children in San Juan de Floresta wrote letters of thank you and these were mailed back to USA. When we returned in April 2010, the teacher had ready a wonderful batch of beautifully written letters of thank you, some including photos. Also the children had crafted many hand-made necklaces of seeds from different plants that grow in the jungle. This was a touching gesture since this village does not make crafts or jewelry to sell, only to use or give as gifts. The letters and necklaces were mailed in May 2010.
Here are photos of the children from both countries:
From New Hampshire to the jungle..........
From the school supplies to vitamins to toys to shoes.......
To the writing of thank yous.......
