Delivering medicines
and medical supplies
In the past we delivered basic medicines and medical supplies every 3 months to the villages on the Napo River.  We are now  transitioning to a program of sustainable medication acquisition with community resources.  Each village has a lay health care worker called a health promotor.  The people in the villages pool their monies to be given to the promotor for purchase of medicines from the government clinics and pharmacies.  The promotor in turn brings the medicines to the villages and sells them back to the people, thus assuring an ongoing supply of medicines and money to buy medicines needed in the future.

The promotor places the medicines in a botaquin, a simple medicine chest or cabinet.  People from the village then come to the promotor for care, and if needed, medicines and supplies.  We have asked them to keep a log of the medicines that are given, so we can monitor their use and check for appropriate usage, and also to know if there were any problems or adverse occurrences.

We do educational seminars for the promotores, in addition to their having attended classes in the government clinics.  We supply instructions in Spanish for each medicine be used.

Since we are an ONG (NGO) in Peru, we are permitted to buy our medicines from the Minister of Health.  Whether they are dispensed in our clinics or donated to villages, these are the same medicines that the people would receive from the local clinics, so they are familiar with the names and packaging.  We also receive some medicines as direct donations.

Some of the medicines available for our purchase are:
Antibiotics  - tablets and suspensions, creams, eye drops
Ibuprofen and acetaminophen - tablets and suspensions
Cough syrups
Anti-parasite medicines - tablets and suspensions
Cortisone and Antifungal creams
Antacids
Antidiarrheal medicines and Rehydration solutions

We also deliver more complex medicines and medical supplies to the local clinics and the 2 hospitals in Iquitos, Hospital Regional and Hospital Apoyo.
